How it builds up

Nobody plans to fall behind on versions

Your store is on Magento 2 already, so for a while there is no obvious reason to touch it. It works, it sells, and an upgrade is the kind of job that never quite makes it to the top of the list.

Then the small signs start. A security patch is released and your developer says it will not apply cleanly on your version. An extension you rely on has a new release that needs a newer Magento than you are running. The admin starts feeling sluggish. Each one on its own is easy to wave off, but together they are your store telling you the gap between where you are and the current release has grown wider than is comfortable.

What it costs to wait

An old version is a slow leak, not a clean break

The risk you can name is security. Every Magento release closes off vulnerabilities, and the longer you sit on an old one, the longer the list of known holes that apply to your store. That is the part that should worry you most, because it is the part attackers count on.

The rest is quieter. The newer features and performance improvements you are not getting. The extensions you cannot update because they need a newer core. The checkout that is a version or two behind what your customers now expect. None of it shows up as a single bad day, but it is steadily costing you, and the gap only gets bigger and more expensive to close the longer you leave it.

What changes

What you get on the latest release

Once you are current, the patches apply again, so staying secure becomes routine instead of a project. You get the newest Magento 2 features and the performance work that has gone into recent releases, which shows up as faster pages and a more modern, secure checkout.

Your existing functionality stays the same, so your team is not relearning the store. The difference is that the platform underneath is supported and up to date, and your extensions can move forward again rather than being stuck on whatever version you were frozen at.

How we do it

Our five-step upgrade process

We never touch your live store while we work. The upgrade happens on a copy, gets tested, then goes live.

Analyze

We audit your current store and the third-party extensions that need upgrading, then write a plan for the work before anything starts.

Replica

We set up a staging copy of your store so we can upgrade the version without affecting the live site, and work through it cleanly there.

Upgrade

Following the plan, we upgrade your Magento to the latest release in the testing environment, including your extensions and customisations.

QA

We check that all your data came through without loss and fix the bugs and errors that an upgrade can throw up, before any of it reaches customers.

Then we go live. After QA sign-off it is a controlled cutover with no downtime, and we watch the store closely for the first sixty days and fix any post-launch issue free.

Questions

Common questions

Which version should I upgrade to?

We generally recommend the latest stable Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce release, for both security and performance. You can see the current version in Adobe's release notes. If you are still on Magento 1, the right first step is migrating to Magento 2 rather than upgrading in place.

Will I keep the functionality I have now?

Yes. Your existing functionality stays the same after the upgrade. On top of that you get the newer features, performance improvements and security work from the releases you are catching up on.

My store has a lot of data and customisations. Will those survive?

Yes, we make sure your data and customisations work properly on the new version. For heavier custom code, you can also bring on a dedicated developer from our team to refactor it to fit the upgrade.

Will my existing extensions still work?

In most cases an upgrade does not break existing extension functionality. We audit every extension during the analyze phase and recommend updating any to their latest versions to avoid compatibility issues.

Will the upgrade hurt my SEO rankings?

No. An upgrade should not affect your SEO. Our SEO people monitor your rankings during and after the upgrade so nothing slips.

How long does it take?

It depends on how complex your store is and how much data and customisation it carries. We give you a timeline once we have analyzed your store in the free audit, so you know before we start.
