Since the launch of Magento 2, the migration of Magento 2 is the talk of the town. Because with the launch of Magento 2, Magento also announced the end of life support for its prominent platform Magento 1. Most of the Magento 1 eCommerce leaders shifted to Magento 2 foreseeing its potential and future in the eCommerce industry.

But many Magento 1 merchants did not want to move or were afraid to move to something new. They had many questions in their mind and did not get answers to those questions. So, we have compiled some of the questions here, which we have found during our research from our past migration clients. This compiled list consists of Magento 2 Migration Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). These questions will answer you why, when, how, what of the Magento 2 migration. So, let’s get started.

  1. How long does it take to migrate to Magento 2?

Magento 2 migration consists of the migration of data, extensions, theme, custom codes, functions, and testing. Data migration is a crucial part of the whole process. So, if you don’t want to lose any of the data during migration, then hire a certified Magento 2 migration company.

Coming back to the question, the first step of migration is data migration. it can take around one to two weeks for migrating the whole site’s data. The next step is extension migration. Extensions of Magento 1 don’t work with Magento 2. So, you have to spend time finding new extension and installing them one by one. The more the extensions you have greater the time. Roughly, it can take around one to two weeks. After extensions, theme building and installation is next. If you go for a ready-to-use theme, then it may take only one week. But if you want to have a similar look and feel of Magento 1 into Magento 2, then it may take more than one month. Next, Magento Code Migration Toolkit helps in migrating custom codes in your Magento 2. Some codes may not be compatible with Magento 2. Therefore, you may have to rewrite the whole code or re-develop the whole functionality.

In overall, it may take 2-3 months or more depending upon the complexities of your store for migrating Magento 1 to 2.

  1. I have a large inventory and over half a million customers data, will it affect the time for migration to Magento 2?

Yes, it may affect the time taken for migration but not significantly. Data Migration Tool by Magento helps migrate inventory data and customer data efficiently. Migrating that much data does not affect the overall migration period. But it may take time to check and guarantee that the data has migrated correctly and nothing is missing.

So, it does not make that much of a difference in time to migrate. But if you have a large inventory and customer data, then it may take time to check the data is safely migrated.

  1. Is it possible to migrate Magento 1’s multiple storefronts to Magento 2?

Yes, it is. But the time required to achieve that increases significantly. Because we may have to set up each domain separately. The theme installation will also take time because we have to install it for each website unless if you decide to use the same template. Migrating all the data and extensions will also take a bit more time. So, overall, it is possible to migrate Magento 1’s multiple storefronts to Magento 2.

  1. Will my Magento 1 store suffer from a performance drain due to migration to Magento 2?

As per our knowledge, Magento 2 Migration Process should not affect the performance of the Magento 1 store. But in some scenarios, it can. For example, if you try to migrate and develop Magento 2 site on your existing site’s server, then it may drain the performance of your Magento 1 site. Therefore, migrate it to another server first. Check all the necessary details, then make it live on your existing server. Doing this will not affect the performance of your Magento 1 site during migration to Magento 2.

  1. If the migration to Magento 2 takes more than expected, then how can I make sure that the data migrated to Magento 2 includes the latest data as well?

Migration to Magento 2 may take from 2 to 6 months, or in some cases even more. The time is taken for migration solely depends upon how complex and customize your store is. Data migration is the first step of the whole process. Migration to Magento 2 may take longer than expected and during that period your existing site will generate new data. So, when the migration to Magento 2 concludes, we recommend you to import the data again with the Data Migration Tool. This will make sure that the latest data is also migrated to your Magento 2.

  1. What is the right time to migrate to Magento 2?

There is no such right time for doing good work. With the launch of advanced and feature-rich platform Magento 2 in 2015, many community members moved to Magento 2. But some people are still stuck with Magento 2. Also, now the Magento 1 EOL is coming near. So, if we have to suggest the right time to migrate to Magento 2, then it is now. Because you still have some time before Magento ends the life support in June 2020. And once we are past June 2020, there will be many problems arising one after another. You can read this article to know what happens to your Magento 2 store after June 2020.

  1. How much would I have to spend in total for whole migration to Magento 2 process?

This is one of the toughest questions most people want an answer to. The cost of migration does not only include the cost of the partner agency you hire. It is a total of,

  • The license fee for Magento 2 edition (Applicable only if you choose Commerce or Could Edition which starts from $22,000 a year)
  • Cost of third-party extensions (Depends upon how many extensions you have)
  • Theme building and customization (Depends upon your choice between ready to use or building from scratch)
  • Any added features or code customization (Depends upon how complex your requirement is)
  • And Migration agency you hire (Depends upon how long the whole project takes)

If you hire Magento 2 development agency, they may charge you on an hourly basis for any development work they do. So, the cost of a migration agency depends upon how long your project lasts.

  1. Any guarantee or after support is provided once the migration to Magento 2 concludes?

Many migration agencies charge for any kind of support after the process is over. But there are many developers like Mconnect Media who do provide support even after the migration process is over. The support is necessary because many issues can arise after migration concludes. Reputable companies like us – Mconnect Media – provide 60 days of support after Magento 2 migration is over. 1. Do I have to necessarily hire a Magento 2 migration company? Can’t I just do it on my own?

Yes, you should definitely hire an agency for migration work. We say this not only for our own benefit but for your benefit too. Let’s say you are a technically sound person. And can gather up resources and procedures, which you can follow and start to migrate your store. But if something goes wrong and you are not able to solve that, then your store would be in jeopardy. Developers have years of experience. So, they can do the work much faster while ensuring that your store is working fine once the process complete. Therefore, we suggest that you should hire an agency for migrating to Magento 2.

  1. Will I lose any functionality after migrating to Magento 2 or everything will remain the same?

All of the default functionalities will remain in your Magento 2 when you migrate from Magento 1. But here’s the good news that Magento has added some functionalities that will enhance the performance of your Magento 2 store. In addition to that, Magento 2 Commerce/Cloud Editions are way more powerful than what Magento Enterprise Edition was. But to keep functionalities of third-party extensions, you have to find similar Magento 2 Extensions.
